What Small Business Really Looks Like From Inside a Community

Small Business Saturday has a special place in my heart because it shines a light on the people who shape our local economy in the most human ways. It’s the micro business owners, the independents, the creators, the community partners, and the small operators who create places for people to do their best work.

It’s a moment of recognition. A moment that says: your work matters and so do you.

And while the campaign celebrates what small businesses bring to our towns and cities, there’s also a quieter story running underneath. One that spans every day of the year, one that lives in the conversations, collaborations, challenges and small wins that make up the real fabric of small business life.

That’s the story I want to honour here.

Small Business Is a Community Effort and Not a Solo Journey

There’s a misconception that small business is powered by solo entrepreneurs. Yes, every business begins with someone’s idea or passion, but it is also shaped by the network and ecosystem of support around them.

In Newry and the wider region, that network is incredibly rich – a web of people and organisations who, in different ways, help carry the load, here are just some of the examples that we’ve collaborated with over the years:

  • Micro business owners & freelancers – the people building meaningful work around family life, health, values and the realities of modern living.
  • Independent coworking and workspace operators – across Northern Ireland and the border counties, small hubs provide calm, people-led spaces & we’ve lucky to collaborate with operators acorss Europe and beyond over the years.
  • Clanrye Group – supporting individuals and families so they can participate fully in work and community life.
  • The Growth Network – led by Martin Murtagh, providing grounded, human connection and emotional support.
  • Newry BID – strengthening the city’s business environment and supporting local traders.
  • Connected Hubs Ireland & regional operators – independent operators across Ireland creating opportunity, supported by national champions.
  • The unsung champions who keep businesses running – electricians, plumbers, IT specialists, cafés, printers, cleaners, designers, bookkeepers, postal and delivery drivers keep everything functioning smoothly. They are the invisible infrastructure of small business.

The Emotional Landscape Behind the Work

Through coaching and podcast conversations, I’ve seen how much emotional labour small business owners carry: uncertainty, financial pressure, responsibility and the ongoing need to adapt.

Why We Applied to SmallBiz100 And What It Meant

The Hub Newry applied not for individual recognition, but to represent the wider ecosystem. Being selected felt like validation for the founders, freelancers, operators, community partners, suppliers and supporters who collectively strengthen our region.

What Small Business Really Looks Like

Moments of clarity, rebuilding confidence, finding collaboration, receiving support at the right time, and discovering a sense of belonging, these are the true markers of progress.

Looking Ahead: Celebrating Small Business Saturday Together

This year we celebrate the full ecosystem – the micro businesses, coworking operators, Clanrye Group, The Growth Network, Newry BID, suppliers and behind-the-scenes champions. Small business is a collective effort and a powerful force in our communities.

Next steps…

If you’re a purpose-led small business owner or coworking operator quietly carrying a lot, you don’t need to do more you need support that works with you, not against you.

That’s what I love helping people create – businesses and flow that feel human, grounded, and sustainable.

Coach for Micro Business Leaders & Neighbourhood Coworking Operators | Co-Founder, The Hub Newry

MD & Co Founder

Hi, I’m Suzanne Murdock - Co-Founder & Operator of The Hub Newry, a neighbourhood coworking and flexible workspace in the heart of Newry. For over 13 years I’ve worked closely with micro business owners, remote workers, growing teams and coworking operators, helping create calmer, more sustainable ways of working that support both people and performance. Alongside running The Hub, I also coach and mentor purpose-led business owners and neighbourhood coworking/flex space operators who are often quietly carrying a lot behind the scenes. My work focuses on helping people create more clarity, structure and momentum within real-life time, energy and capacity - without losing the human side of what they’re building. Much of what I write about here explores: • flexible and hybrid working • neighbourhood coworking and local business ecosystems • leadership, energy and decision fatigue • creating supportive environments where people can do their best work • balancing ambition with real life If you’re exploring workspace options, navigating change in your business, or simply trying to create a steadier and more sustainable way of working, you’re very welcome to get in touch. You can connect with me through The Hub Newry or email me at suzanne@thehubnewry.com 💛
