What does real support for micro business owners & coworking leaders look like?

If you’re running a micro business or managing a neighbourhood coworking space, you’re probably the one others rely on. You’re the organiser, the listener. The person quietly holding things together, not just the work, but the people.

But have you ever stopped to ask:

What does real support look like for you?

It’s a question that’s come up again and again in recent coaching conversations and podcast interviews on Powering Productivity. Because while so many founders and community leaders are showing up for others day in and day out, very few feel they have space to be supported themselves.

Those doing the holding often need the most holding themselves.

Whether you’re a small business owner or leading a coworking space, support for micro business owners and community operators isn’t a luxury, it’s what makes sustainable leadership possible.

The Emotional Work Behind Micro Business and Coworking Life

From the outside, it might look like managing members, clients, hosting events, or keeping systems running. But underneath, you’re holding emotional space. You’re building connection and belonging, you’re checking in on members & teams and holding space for their challenges, too.

As Leah Fairman of Connected Hubs Ireland said on the podcast:

“You can be managing the wi-fi and the heating, while also listening to someone talk about how lonely they feel working from home and you have to hold both with care.”

That kind of dual responsibility, practical and emotional is something many founders carry quietly and it takes its toll over time.

Why support for micro business owners matters more than Eever

Stephen Carolan from the National Hub Network offered this powerful insight:

“It’s about humanising work again. The flexibility is great, but without community, it can get isolating fast.”

The truth is: leading with heart is rewarding but it’s also draining. You’re navigating daily uncertainty, holding emotional space and often doing it all alone.

Real support for micro business owners and coworking leaders means being able to pause, reset and feel held not just seen as capable.

What real support actually looks like

It’s easy to assume support has to be formal or solution-focused, but often, it’s much simpler:

  • A space where you don’t have to pretend everything’s fine
  • Conversations where you’re not the one holding space
  • Reconnecting with what you need, not just what others expect
  • Hearing “me too” from someone who gets it

Bernie Mitchell of The London Coworking Assembly summed it up beautifully:

“It’s so much easier to solve challenges as collectives. Stop keeping all that stuff in your head — it can be a really lonely place!”

Support isn’t about fixing, it’s about being able to let go for a moment, to be real, to be human.

One small moment that changed the energy

At The Hub Newry, we hosted what was meant to be a simple meet-up. No slides, no structure, just people in a room, talking.

It organically turned into something much more, a kind of storytelling circle. Afterwards, one of our members said:

“I didn’t realise how much I needed to talk to people who get it. It made me feel like I wasn’t the only one trying to figure this out.”

That’s what real support looks like. It’s not always flashy but it’s deeply felt.

You don’t have to do this alone

Whether you’re running a coworking hub or building a solo business, you don’t need to carry everything on your own. You can still lead with care, you can still show up fully. But you also deserve space to breathe, to reset, to feel supported.

This is the kind of space I offer in my coaching:

Real support for micro business owners and local leaders who are ready to care for themselves the way they care for others.

If you’re craving connection, calm, or even just a real conversation  I’d love to hear from you.

Because you don’t have to carry it all alone. 💛

MD & Co Founder

Hi, I’m Suzanne Murdock - Co-Founder & Operator of The Hub Newry, a neighbourhood coworking and flexible workspace in the heart of Newry. For over 13 years I’ve worked closely with micro business owners, remote workers, growing teams and coworking operators, helping create calmer, more sustainable ways of working that support both people and performance. Alongside running The Hub, I also coach and mentor purpose-led business owners and neighbourhood coworking/flex space operators who are often quietly carrying a lot behind the scenes. My work focuses on helping people create more clarity, structure and momentum within real-life time, energy and capacity - without losing the human side of what they’re building. Much of what I write about here explores: • flexible and hybrid working • neighbourhood coworking and local business ecosystems • leadership, energy and decision fatigue • creating supportive environments where people can do their best work • balancing ambition with real life If you’re exploring workspace options, navigating change in your business, or simply trying to create a steadier and more sustainable way of working, you’re very welcome to get in touch.
