Laying the foundations & enabling a great community around you….

Community and belongingness are topics that I love talking about so much. I’ve kind of figured about they’re definitely one of my pillars when it comes to coworking & coaching & in deed life in general it fills me with energy. So what does community mean to me?

As a flex & coworking operator, laying the foundations and finding the right environment to enable that community to start building and engaging is a fundamental, without it there’s no coworking.

But, I don’t believe operators or operations teams can actually physically build communities themselves. It’s about creating that environment, introducing members to each other, helping them interact in meaningful ways with each other, and finding those people they feel comfortable with. To do this you have to build relationships with them first, understand who they are, what they need, how they tick, who they gel with.

The flip side (from my perspective as an individual) is finding your tribe. The people who you feel comfortable around, who inspire you, their energy, who are present when you need that support, and who you can be really open with and trust are a big thing for me.

It’s important to say it doesn’t happen overnight – both building the community and finding the community that’s right for you. I’ve been thinking about this and, as we’re all so busy with different elements of our lives at different times, we don’t always know what we need and who we need to speak to give us that energy.

It’s about taking some time out and really understanding what you need at that time. You might have different community groups, both in work and out of work, who you really feel that sense of energy from at different times.

If you’d like to hear more about my take & experiences in SME coworking & community you can ready more here in a recent conversation I had with Lucy McInally, ‘The Inclusive Coworker’ on ‘Finding Your Tribe: Belonging, Community, and the ‘Co’ in Coworking’

I’d love to know what you think, what are your experiences, what feedback have you had?

MD & Co Founder

Hi, I’m Suzanne Murdock - Co-Founder & Operator of The Hub Newry, a neighbourhood coworking and flexible workspace in the heart of Newry. For over 13 years I’ve worked closely with micro business owners, remote workers, growing teams and coworking operators, helping create calmer, more sustainable ways of working that support both people and performance. Alongside running The Hub, I also coach and mentor purpose-led business owners and neighbourhood coworking/flex space operators who are often quietly carrying a lot behind the scenes. My work focuses on helping people create more clarity, structure and momentum within real-life time, energy and capacity - without losing the human side of what they’re building. Much of what I write about here explores: • flexible and hybrid working • neighbourhood coworking and local business ecosystems • leadership, energy and decision fatigue • creating supportive environments where people can do their best work • balancing ambition with real life If you’re exploring workspace options, navigating change in your business, or simply trying to create a steadier and more sustainable way of working, you’re very welcome to get in touch. You can connect with me through The Hub Newry or email me at suzanne@thehubnewry.com 💛
