Finding balance: simple steps for SME & micro business leaders to thrive amid chaos
Gaining some consistent resemblance of a work life balance as an SME or micro business leader is tough…..
How do you get clarity & the time & energy to move forward without going around in circles & forgetting to breath, to make time for the relationships & human connections in your life?
It’s a struggle, especially if you’re a small team or maybe flying solo & this doesn’t just apply to coworking or flexible workspace operators but to a lot of SME or micro business leaders. You’re wearing multiple hats, time poor & probably struggling to navigate continually changing client requirements, market dynamics, increasing compliance, admin, finance, marketing & evolving trends in your sector, shall I go on? That doesn’t even cover juggling business & family or changing personal commitments, taking time out for holidays….what holidays?
It’s exhausting, frustrating, sometimes frightening, you forget to breath & it can have a real domino effect on you both inside and outside of work.
I’ve been an SME owner for over 13 years now & it’s not been easy but over the years I’ve found that using these few simple steps & tweaking them now & again has made my life a little bit simpler & freed up some time & energy to spend on what’s important to me.
- Get clear your goal – mine’s always been to try & make time for the people closest to me, to give them 100% when I’m with them, this applies both inside & outside of work
- Building those connections & relationships with members & clients, really understand what they need, how they work. Over time you can start to anticipate changing requirements & quick wins for both parties making everything a lot more seamless.
- Get to know your coworker’s strengths to help each other out that way you’ve more time for all the other stuff.
- About the other stuff…like compliance, logistics, keep a timeline or schedule of everything that needs done routinely & diarise, block out times in your diary & block out regular downtime for you.
- Be brave & start to outsource or delegate those bits you’re not so strong on, start with small tasks until you build up confidence.
- There are loads of workflow management & scheduling tools out there, Asana, Monday, Calendly
- Don’t forget to keep checking in with yourself, if you don’t put you first how can you look after anyone else?
Hope this helps & if any of this resonates with you then please reach out to me.
