Stronger together: How the right partnerships support a sustainable, strategic & human way to work
I didn’t start out thinking partnerships would be the thing that sustained me, but looking back, they’ve made all the difference.
When you’re running a coworking space or a micro business, it’s easy to fall into the trap of doing it all. But some of the most powerful progress, both emotionally and operationally has come from aligning with the right people, at the right time.
Over the years, I’ve learned that partnerships aren’t just about growth they’re about longevity, values, clarity and energy. They’ve helped me shape a business that reflects how I actually want to work and live and that feels sustainable in every sense of the word. This is the kind of emotionally sustainable work that supports both life and business.
What partnerships really offer (it’s not just about growth)
There’s often this idea that collaboration is all about scaling, getting more reach, more visibility, more revenue.
But in reality, the right partnerships offer something deeper:
- Someone to share the emotional weight with
- A fresh pair of eyes and a different way of thinking
- Support in areas that aren’t your strengths
- A way to create things together, events, services, visibility
- A stronger local voice when we work side by side
Whether it’s a conversation that shifts your thinking, a shared project that feels energising, or just knowing you’ve got people around you, partnerships make a big difference. Strategic business partnerships like these are a lifeline for small and micro business owners.
Real-world collaboration that’s made a difference
I’ve seen this again and again both at The Hub Newry and across the coworking world proof that sustainable coworking doesn’t happen in isolation.
- In Rochester, Kent, Dragon Coworking has turned partnership into everyday practice working with local groups, running regular member-led events and supporting youth initiatives. You feel the community in everything they do.
- KindHaus in London, founded by Ann-Marie Kinlock, combines workspace with flexible childcare, meeting real-life needs in a grounded way. They worked with local government and parent networks to bring the whole concept to life.
- At Patch, they’ve reimagined town centre coworking by partnering with local councils, traders and creatives forming collaborative workspaces that are just as much about community as they are about work.
And it’s not just external collaborations. Some of the best partnerships start within your own network.
At The Hub Newry, Northern Ireland:
- We work closely with The Tax Cafe NI (one of our long-standing members) who manage our accounts and invoicing. Their sister company, My Mailbox Services Ltd, handles our mail, deliveries and compliance admin – jobs I’m very happy to hand over!
- Our IT support comes from a brilliant local managed services provider who’s helped us navigate all the changing tech and digital risks over the years, a lifeline, truly.
- We always try to source locally, not just to support the economy, but because it makes life easier. You can have real conversations, quicker decisions and stronger trust. These kinds of micro business collaborations are rooted in shared values and mutual respect.
Other help out there:
- Get help with your content writing, newsletters, marketing scheduling and posting
- Don’t struggle with event planning if it’s not your bag, there are fantastic experts & apps now who make it all seamless. There’s a fab app that Bernie Mitchell recommends for events, Luma – it integrates seamlessly into your newsletter to help with promotion!
These relationships aren’t just convenient, they make the work feel lighter, clearer, more connected.
Staying sustainable, operationally and emotionally
This year, we’ve joined the Sustainability Index initiative with Instant Offices – the flexible workspace industry’s first sustainability benchmarking tool. It promises to help us track our operational performance and be transparent about our impact.
It’s not a box-ticking exercise. For us, it’s about making sure the way we operate aligns with how we want to show up in the world, for our members, our partners and our future. It’s how we’re building a more sustainable business partnership model inside and out.
Growing together with the coworking movement
Over the past 13+ years, I’ve watched the coworking world shift and grow and I’ve grown with it.
Being part of the European Coworking Assembly, London Coworking Assembly, and FlexSa has given me access to brilliant, diverse perspectives and friendships that have shaped the way I work. Whether it’s campaigns on accessibility, inclusion, or freelancer-first support, these networks help remind me that I’m part of something much bigger than my own four walls.
And what I love most is this: we’re all learning together, nobody has it all figured out. But when we share what we know and support each other along the way, it’s amazing what can unfold.
🤝 You don’t have to do it all
If you’re holding a lot right now – running a business, holding space for others, trying to do the right thing without burning out please know this:
You’re not alone.
And you don’t have to carry it all.
In my coaching work, I support micro business leaders and neighbourhood coworking operators to:
- Build partnerships that feel aligned, not draining
- Make space for clarity and confidence in collaboration
- Choose what’s right for you, not just what looks good on paper
- Run your business in a way that’s both effective and emotionally sustainable
If you’re at the point where you know something needs to shift, I’d love to hear your story.
Always here with heart 💛
