Don’t go it alone – cooperation & supporting eachother.

So what is the difference between collaboration, curation, and cooperation? – part of the #AskTheExpert series.

Let’s ask an expert, Jesse Lyn Stoner, Founder of Seapoint Center for Collaborative Leadership!

Collaboration is working together to create something new in support of a shared vision. The key points are that it is not through individual effort, something new is created, and that the glue is the shared vision.

Cooperation is important in networks where individuals exchange relevant information and resources in support of each other’s goals, rather than a shared goal. Something new may be achieved as a result, but it arises from the individual, not from a collective team effort.

Curation ”what does a museum have to do with an office?” I hear you ask!

Put simply, it’s an evolution from what we know as coworking. Curated coworking spaces put like minded people and companies together where they can build a relationship, share office space and, most importantly, have the potential to pass information and expertise to each other and collaborate on projects.

“Yes, but, I’m a professional in a single practice or a micro business owner, how does this work for me?”

Well consider the wisdom shared at BizCampAND 2015, by Ken Sharp, Hospitality consultant and owner of the Salty Dog Hotel, Bar & Bistro Bangor:

“Never underestimate the power of Coopetition!”

The case he made may seem obvious that it works well in the Travel/Tourism/Hospitality sector – where competitors agree to cooperate to promote a region – hence increasing the size of the business pie – which means a greater total value of business for which they’re competing…

But it works in tech too – and you can read more on that here.

And what about professional services?

Well, tell a random Dubliner that your business is based in Newry – and the odds are pretty good that they’ll tell you their dentist is in Newry.

We have less to fear from our competitors – and no matter the size of your business or the industry – #Collaboration, #Curation, #Cooperation and even #Coopetition is worth giving a go!
